6 Must-Have Items for a Stylish Entryway that can Handle the Spring Weather

Here comes the sun… but also the rain, mud, and mess! As we transition into Spring, our entryways often become a landing zone for muddy shoes, wet jackets, and all the little things that come with unpredictable weather. But just because this space needs to be practical doesn’t mean it can’t be charming. A well-designed entryway sets the tone for your home while keeping clutter in check. Here are my top six picks for stylish and functional items that will make your entryway work harder—without sacrificing style.

Note: For some items I’ve made specific product recommendations, with direct links to the product online. I am not receiving compensation from these companies. I’m making personal recommendations based on products that I’ve purchased for clients or for my own home.

  1. Make a Good First Impression with a Welcoming Door Mat

Prevent mud from making its way inside with a large coir or rubber-backed doormat on the outside of your front door. I’ve also suggested an old-fashioned boot scrape for clients that have a historical home and/or more traditional taste.

I like coir mats because they’re made of natural materials, and are biodegradable. They have a nice grit to them, like a Brillo pad for the bottoms of your shoes. You will often see coir doormats available with a printed design and/or words appropriate for every season, so it’s nice to have a few you can rotate throughout the year.

2. A Durable, Easy-to-Clean Rug

Spring showers mean wet shoes, so a washable rug or an indoor/outdoor runner is essential. Look for durable materials like polypropylene or machine-washable polyester that don’t absorb a lot of moisture and can handle heavy foot traffic.

Many of my clients like Ruggable. If you’re willing to take the extra steps of removing and reapplying the Velcro-attached backing every time you wash the rug, I think Ruggable is a good option if you want a fun pattern. Otherwise, Rugs Direct has a whole bunch of washable rugs in a variety of patterns… you’ll need to buy a separate non-slip rug pad for most of those. I’m a fan of Porte & Hall doormats, which are great quality, come in 3 sizes, and have a built-in slip-resistant backing.

3. A Statement Coat Rack or Wall Hooks

A sturdy coat rack or a row of decorative wall hooks helps keep jackets and bags off the floor. Opt for brass, matte black, or wooden hooks that complement your home’s aesthetic.

If you are trying to encourage your kids to hang up their belongings (we all know they won’t take the extra step of opening a closet door and putting their jacket on a hanger… and many of them cannot reach the hanger yet), I suggest installing 2-3 wall hooks at 48” from the floor.

4. A Boot Tray or Shoe Rack

Tote baskets are great for hiding shoes, but you don’t want to pile up wet or muddy footwear before they’ve dried out. A washable boot tray keeps them corralled while they dry, preventing moisture and dirt from collecting in your storage baskets.

I’m also a fan of industrial style or mid-century modern style shoe racks, which will elevate the footwear off the floor, for better air flow. Many shoe racks have multiple tiers which is great if you have a lot of shoes piling up by the door. Bonus points if the shoe rack doubles as a bench seat.

5. Stylish Umbrella Storage

Don’t let dripping umbrellas make a mess—an elegant umbrella stand (typically metal or ceramic) keeps them contained and easy to grab on rainy days. I love antiques, so in my house we use a large butter churn crock for an umbrella holder.

6. Seasonal Florals or Greenery

Let’s welcome Springtime by bringing the best parts of the season into our home (minus all the muddy bits!). Potted greenery (ferns and moss are my favorites), fresh cut tulips, or a vase of forsythia stems will be a lovely addition to your entry table.

Not a plant person? Here’s another way to create an earthy ambience without greenery… Place pebbles or smooth river rocks within a large glass votive, with a scented candle perched on top. The aroma will create a wonderful first impression for anyone that walks in the door.
